Prior to embarking on this project, I had a set of beliefs that I knew were the pillars of what I wanted to eventually undertake.
01. ‘THE GAP’.
We know how we started and where we are now, but thousands of years of advanced, valuable iteration is neglected by the way we learn.
By not knowing how we got here, we lose essential truths, and are doomed to repeat avoidable mistakes.
02. ENVIRONMENTAL LOGIC IS INTUITIVE.
A child could do it, and children did do it. We’ve just unlearned it. All you need is your body.
03. WE HAVE NO SENSE OF SCALE.
Or time, or duration, or distance. We imagine and feel these things through tools and screens, forgetting their context. Globalization makes these concepts more and more foreign.
04. ORIENTATION IS EVERYTHING.
All that you learn, and all you will ever produce, relies on how you know what time it is, and where you are in the world.
Everything.
It is incredibly important to clearly and deliberately define how you imagine time and space. Be careful. Be picky. Be aware. Know where it’s coming from.
05. KNOWLEDGE IS DISAPPEARING.
More knowledge is completely lost than we could ever fathom. It is being rewritten and skewed at a terrifying, accelerating rate.
Even what does manage to survive, our minds will no longer be able to receive. So the knowledge is still lost.
06. IF IT IS NOT MADE COMPUTATIONALLY LEGIBLE, IT WILL DISAPPEAR.
The dominating narratives and ideologies will be those that are easily understood by a computer.
07. HUMANS ARE NOT THAT CREATIVE.
The attributes of the things we imagine rely on the attributes of the tools or the language we use to represent them. Our imagination is shaped by the characteristics of these physical things.
08. WE DESIGN TOOLS THAT FLATTEN AND ERASE.
There is a way to be efficient and advanced without historical amnesia. We can cultivate the field without clearing it.09. WE SET OUR OWN TRAPS.
The tools we design have invisible constraints which we mistake for reality, and the phenomena that inspired their framework are forced into an artificial symmetry. That artificial symmetry becomes our reality, and we will keep building on it as if it were real.10. TIME AND SPACE IS EMBODIED.
Our psychology, and our relationship with our environment and with others, is built on time and space being an active, physical, embodied discovery, not the passive reception of a number dictated by a screen.
